A Collaborative Approach to Urban Challenges: Nature-based Solutions in Practice

Date: 11.03.2025
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are emerging as a key tool to address pressing environmental and urban challenges across Central Europe. Within the framework of GreenScape CE, project partner AMBIENTE ITALIA highlights the importance of these approaches in driving interdisciplinary collaboration and building more resilient cities.

Iliriana, urban planner at AMBIENTE ITALIA, reflects on the added value of NbS in diverse urban contexts—from local neighbourhoods to larger cities like Milan. These solutions combine environmental benefits with social and economic resilience by integrating technical knowledge, financial strategies, and citizen participation.

As part of the GreenScape CE methodology, a three-dimensional model is being developed and tested across pilot cities. This model links:

• Technical expertise for effective design and implementation,

• Financial mechanisms to ensure long-term viability, and

• Community engagement to increase ownership and inclusivity.

The lessons drawn from these pilot activities will inform future urban planning practices and contribute to scaling nature-based solutions throughout Central Europe. The collaborative approach adopted by the GreenScape CE partnership aims to deliver tailored and replicable solutions that support the transition to climate-resilient, people-centred urban environments.
