Pilot project: Keeping Rostock’s fire lanes free with smart parking sensors

Date: 08.10.2025

NXTLVL Parking partner, City of Rostock, started a new pilot measure: Rostock is testing ground sensors to keep no-parking zones clear in the city center—especially where free access for emergency vehicles is crucial.

In three pilot areas in the city center, the sensors detect cars that are parked illegally and send the information directly to the city’s enforcement team. The innovative pilot project focuses primarily on keeping fire lanes clear. The accessibility of fire lanes is a matter of safety. Unfortunately, these essential emergency routes are repeatedly blocked by illegally parked vehicles despite the nearby car parks.

The project also looks at another challenge: blocked loading zones. Delivery vehicles often have no choice but to stop on the roadway or sidewalks, creating hazards for other road users. Here, too, the pilot project will test how the sensor system will help to keep the loading area accessible and support smooth commercial traffic.

If the pilot proves successful, the sensor system could soon expand to other critical areas in Rostock.
