On 4 September 2025, the Training Center of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) in Dunaharaszti hosted a professional event jointly organized by the Food4Health Innovation Hub of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) and NAK, entitled Strengthening the Innovation Capacities of Alternative Food Networks.”

The event was held within the framework of the Food4CE project, which aims to map, develop, and support the long-term sustainability of Central and Eastern European Alternative Food Networks (AFNs).

The morning session focused on knowledge sharing. Dr. Géza Hitka, Associate Professor at MATE, presented the methodology of mapping AFNs alongside international best practices and innovative business models. This was followed by a presentation from Péter Varga, Secretary of the Cibus Hungaricus Foundation, who introduced digital solutions for short food supply chains. He underlined that while large datasets are vital for development, the real value lies in the conclusions drawn and the capacity of businesses to respond, factors that can provide a significant competitive edge.

In the afternoon, participants engaged in interactive group and individual activities, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses and reviewing the regulatory environment affecting AFNs. A SWOT analysis of the relevant legislation helped systematize supportive and hindering factors, opportunities, and threats, while also outlining future development directions through collectively formulated proposals.

The event fostered a lively professional dialogue and exchange of experiences throughout the day. It proved to be not only a platform for knowledge sharing, but also a valuable networking opportunity, strengthening the community, innovation, and cooperation capacities of Alternative Food Networks.
