The City Municipality of Maribor has launched a pilot project of greening bus shelters as part of the European project MISSION CE CLIMATE, introducing nature-based solutions into the urban environment.
The first five shelters have already been planted in the city centre – at Glavni trg, on Krekova Street in front of the City Hall, on Krekova Street near Strossmayerjeva Street and on Trubarjeva Street near Primary School Bojana Ilicha and next to the Museum of National Liberation. In the coming days, two shelters will follow. By the end of the month, a total of seven green bus shelters will be in place, with two additional ones planned for autumn.
With this initiative, we aim to increase the share of green areas, improve the experience of public transport users, and create more pleasant microclimatic conditions in the city. The selected plants, as a nature-based solution, are resistant to heat and drought, while also enhancing biodiversity and providing food and shelter for pollinators and other insects.
The pilot project is being implemented by the City Municipality of Maribor, the public company Nigrad, and expert partners within the framework of the Interreg Central Europe programme.
