In the nineteenth century, miners would take a canary bird with them into the coal mine to monitor the level of deadly carbon monoxide in the air. Workers themselves could not detect whether the air quality had dangerously worsened, as the gas is odourless and colourless. By paying attention to the canary’s singing, they knew the air had become toxic when the bird stopped singing. The canary always warned the miners before they suffered lasting and irreversible harm. Sadly, unlike animals, people rarely know and understand their healthy limits, and often consciously cross them.*
Each of us has an inner canary that signals when we are in danger, when stress is pushing us in a harmful direction. The canaries within us warn us through various signs: prolonged insomnia, anxiety, depression, headaches, allergies, heartburn, nausea, dizziness, pain, or recurring flare-ups of existing health conditions.
To help you better understand your »inner canary bird«, we developed a tool called the Burnout Self-Assessment Tool (B-SA). An easy-to-use tool that helps you detect your stress levels and risks related to your working environment, providing you with tips on how to successfully self-manage stress.
