Stadtroda is a small city with around 6000 inhabitants in the federal state of Thuringia, Germany, located in the Saale-Holzland district. The heat generation is based on a combined heat and power plants (CHP) and boilers, which use natural gas as energy career. The current heating network spans approximately 6,2 kilometers and supplies multiple buildings. Annual heat production amounts to 26 GWh. In addition to current operations, Stadtroda is actively engaged in municipal heat planning with the goal of achieving a climate-neutral heat supply in the long term. This planning process includes assessing current heat demand, identifying local renewable energy potentials, and developing strategies for the complete decarbonization the heating market in Stadtroda including the DH system.

The pilot project contains the development of a comprehensive transformation plan for the district heating system to reach the climate neutral heat generation by 2045.
