As part of the INACO project meeting in Dubrovnik, partners took part in a technical visit on 13 June 2025 to one of the project’s key pilot sites – the historic Villa Bunić-Kaboga in Rijeka Dubrovačka.

The visit, organized by the Institute for the Restoration of Dubrovnik, offered participants a deeper understanding of the challenges and restoration efforts tied to historic villas along the Ombla River. Once a thriving area of noble estates and summer residences, the region has seen the loss of many heritage buildings — with only 26 villas remaining today.

Villa Bunić-Kaboga stands as a remarkable example of what can be achieved through long-term commitment to conservation. During the visit, the Institute presented its work in restoring this and other villas to their original architectural form, using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and sustainable conservation techniques. The discussion addressed threats such as erosion, flooding, neglect and the impact of urban development — all of which resonate with the INACO project’s broader goals.

This study visit served not only as a technical exploration but also as a powerful reminder of the cultural value embedded in these historical sites. The efforts of the Institute demonstrate how local action and expert knowledge can safeguard heritage for future generations, while also aligning with regional climate adaptation strategies.
