From Waste to Wonder: Bratislava Students Get Creative with E-Waste in Technical Education Classes

Date: 16.05.2025
As part of the Circular WEEEP project’s ongoing educational outreach, students in the 6th and 7th grades (ages 12–13) in Bratislava are engaging hands-on with the issue of electronic waste during their technical education classes.

In cooperation with Bratislava – Old Town, our project partner, the topic of e-waste remains central to the classroom experience. Students have been bringing in old or unused electronics—including Wi-Fi routers, kitchen appliances, cables, and various small devices—from home. These discarded items are not just for collection—they are the raw materials for new, creative projects.

The educational process began with reflection and awareness. Students wrote essays, came up with slogans for future e-waste campaigns, and participated in motivational interviews to raise awareness among their classmates about the importance of sorting and recycling e-waste. This helped build a strong foundation of understanding and purpose behind the hands-on activities that followed.

The next phase brought excitement and teamwork. Students disassembled the donated electronics in small groups, sorting the materials into parts they could reuse and parts destined for proper recycling. Notably, they created their custom collection containers, reinforcing both environmental responsibility and creativity.

The final stage of the activity involved designing and constructing new objects from the salvaged materials. These upcycled creations will be proudly displayed at the school’s end-of-year student exhibition, serving as a celebration of their innovation, teamwork, and commitment to sustainability.

This initiative, supported by Bratislava – Old Town, not only raises awareness about the growing problem of e-waste but also empowers students to take action and reimagine waste as a resource, a core value of the Circular WEEEP mission.
