Volkswagen Joins Global IEA ‘Task 53’ to Standardize V2G

Volkswagen Group has become the first automotive manufacturer to join Task 53 (INBID), an international initiative by the International Energy Agency (IEA) focused on one critical goal: global interoperability for bidirectional charging.

Why This Matters

True scale for V2G can only be achieved if electric vehicles, chargers, and grid operators speak the same technical language. Task 53 brings together global leaders to:

Finalize Standards: Develop a shared, future-proof implementation of the ISO 15118-20 standard for all types of charging.

Ensure Grid Compliance: Test how vehicles interact with grids in Europe, the US, and Asia to prevent technical bottlenecks.

Reduce Costs: Avoid “stranded” solutions, making bidirectional charging cheaper and more accessible for everyone.

Moving Toward the Mass Market

Volkswagen is already technically preparing its MEB-platform models for bidirectional capabilities. By joining Task 53, they are helping to ensure that these “batteries on wheels” can seamlessly support the grid regardless of where they are plugged in.

At V4Grid, we welcome this initiative. It aligns perfectly with our mission to turn EVs into functional, active players in the energy system rather than just a load on the grid.
