So what is changing?
No More Double Fees
Starting in 2026, the updated Energy Industry Act treats EVs like any other storage system. This eliminates the “double grid-fee” penalty for energy stored and then returned to the grid.
Simplified Tech
The new MiSpeL framework (effective April 2026) removes the need for expensive second smart meters and complex bureaucracy. V2G is finally becoming “plug & play.”
The Power Potential Germany has 1.65 million BEVs on the road. If just 20-30% of these were V2G-active, they could deliver:
~1.5 GW of flexible power (equivalent to a major power plant)
~5.0 GWh of short-term storage (enough to power roughly 500,000 average European households for a full day)
From Proof to Scale
We’ve known it works since 2015, when we first powered an office coffee machine with a Nissan Leaf. Now, the market is catching up. Major players like Renault and Mercedes-Benz are already launching V2G-ready offers for 2026.
Why this matters for our project as well?
This move turns cars into the distributed, customer-friendly grid assets. At V4Grid, we are using this momentum to align our own pilots, get inspired and ensure that our region is ready to turn EVs into a functional players as well.
