The Climate Protection and Adapation Department of the City of Worms organised a series of valuable networking events with an the active exchange of knowledge and best practices on climate adaptation strategies. Following the welcoming word of Mayor Stephanie Lohr, the event included expert discussions, a participatory online workshop on adaptation measures, and a public lecture on heat protection and health.
The Programme kicked off with the joint Webinar “Heat protection best practice from Worms and Weiz” by Climate Alliance in the framework of the German Heat Action Day of KLUG, the German Climate Change and Health Alliance. The webinar attracted over 120 participants from various municipalities, regional authorities and resulted in a higly interactive exchange of good practices, activities and events.
Following the webinar, the Municipal steering committee on the heat action plan with invited guests discussed the role and needs of the municipal departments for the sustainable network and concrete steps to protect the citizens of Worms in the case of extreme weather and heat events.
Following the municipal meeting, the training for kindergarden staff was offered, entitled “Dealing with heat in the daycare center – training of the heat protection network” where Sophie Busalt, University Medicine Mannheim held the first of many trainings on the effect and protection measures for small children and kindergarden staff.
The day concluded with the official handover of the Charter for Heat Protection, accompanied by a keynote speech and reception. The Celebration of the heat protection network with specialist lecture and handover of certificates to member institutions attracted relevant municipal departments, kindergardens, senior associations, senior homes, the city’s firefighters, the city’s health response stakeholders such as the Maltese Relief Service and many more were highly valued, both as a contributing partner within Ready4Heat and as a key stakeholder in shaping effective climate adaptation policies.
The Worms stakeholder network members signed a network agreement that serves as a formal framework for cooperation between the City of Worms and the respective institution as a member of the Worms Heat Protection Network. The aim of membership is to strengthen resilience to heat waves and protect vulnerable groups through joint measures. The network supports the participating institutions in implementing preventive heat protection measures and informing their users in good time about extreme weather events. All members declared their support for the charter of the Worms Heat Protection Network that was acknowledged by the City with a certificate ceremony at the end of the day.
