On 21–22 November 2023, project partners visited the Krkonoše Mountains in the Czech Republic to explore examples of sustainable mountain development, regional branding and community-based tourism. Organised by the Association of Regional Brands (ARZ), the study visit was one of the first opportunities for partners to exchange knowledge and identify practical governance solutions that could be adapted in other mountain regions across Central Europe.
The visit demonstrated how the protection of cultural and natural heritage can become a driver of sustainable economic development. Participants explored successful initiatives combining environmental education, tourism, local entrepreneurship and agriculture while strengthening regional identity and community engagement.
One of the highlights was the DOTEK Environmental Centre in Horní Maršov, where the revitalisation of a historic building created a modern centre for environmental education, cultural activities and sustainable tourism. The example illustrated how preserving local heritage can simultaneously support education, tourism and the local economy.
Partners also visited Horní Malá Úpa, Prosečné and Trutnov, where they learned how regional branding supports local producers and businesses. The KRKONOŠE original product label demonstrated how a coordinated branding system can strengthen local identity, increase the visibility of regional products and contribute to economic resilience in mountain communities.
Further examples included Farm Basařovi, combining livestock farming, renewable energy production, agritourism and direct sales of local products, as well as family-owned businesses preserving traditional crafts and food production. Together, these initiatives illustrated how diversified local economies can enhance the long-term sustainability of mountain areas.
The visit also highlighted the importance of nature conservation as an asset for sustainable tourism. During the visit to the Krkonoše National Park and the Treetop Walk in Janské Lázně, participants explored approaches that combine visitor experiences with biodiversity protection and environmental education.
How did this contribute to CENTRAL MOUNTAINS?
The knowledge gained during the study visit provided valuable inspiration for the development of the Joint Strategy, Action Plans and Toolboxes within the CENTRAL MOUNTAINS project. In particular, it contributed to recommendations related to sustainable tourism governance, regional branding, stakeholder engagement and community-led development. The examples from the Krkonoše Mountains demonstrated that successful mountain governance depends on integrating environmental protection, local entrepreneurship and active participation of local communities.
