Presenting Pilot Areas within SuPeRBE Project – Piazzale Romano Guardini, City of Verona, Italy

As part of the SuPeRBE project, Piazzale Romano Guardini – a regeneration area near Verona Porta Nuova station – has been selected as one of the pilot areas.

Verona is a large city (approx. 255,000 inhabitants), capital of the province, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city features both natural and highly urbanised landscapes. The pilot area is located northwest of the Porta Nuova train station and includes public buildings (schools and offices) and large paved surfaces. It is a densely built-up area, almost entirely sealed and lacking vegetation, and thus highly exposed to climate risks such as urban overheating and flooding. The municipality has recently increased its focus on climate adaptation and ecological transition, approving both a SECAP and a Strategic Plan for Ecological Transition (PSTE).

The pilot action will apply the SuPeRBE methodology to a regeneration project in a heavily urbanised zone that includes a school campus and administrative buildings. The action will evaluate the area’s vulnerabilities and support the design of concrete adaptation measures in line with municipal strategies (PAESC, PSTE), with a focus on permeability, green infrastructure, and heat mitigation.

The action will contribute to transforming a sealed and vulnerable urban area into a more liveable and resilient space. It will enable better climate adaptation planning by providing data, analysis, and scenarios for municipal decision-making. The project will also help operationalise existing strategic documents and serve as a model for other similar districts in Verona and beyond.
