The online seminar “Modular Construction Using Steel Modules and Timber Hybrid Systems – Opportunities, Limitations and Procurement in Practice” was organised by the KNB – Competence Centre for Sustainable Procurement Saxony as a capacity-building activity for public authorities. The webinar took place on 27 March 2026 from 09:00 to 11:00 and brought together 25 participants from public sector organisations across the region.
The seminar focused on modular construction as an innovative and increasingly important building method that offers advantages in terms of construction time, planning reliability, cost certainty and sustainability. Participants received a practical introduction to modular construction systems and learned how they differ from temporary container-based solutions.
The webinar provided an overview of steel modular construction and timber hybrid building systems, highlighting their potential applications as well as their limitations. Particular attention was given to sustainability aspects, including comparisons of CO₂ performance with conventional construction methods, as well as opportunities for deconstruction, reuse and adaptation throughout a building’s life cycle.
In addition, the seminar addressed procurement-related considerations for public authorities. Participants received guidance on tendering modular construction projects, including the use of functional specifications and approaches to design-build procurement. Practical examples and references from completed projects illustrated the implementation of modular construction in real-world settings.
The session was led by Sebastian Kühn, Regional Sales Manager at ALHO Systembau GmbH. Having studied Product and Industrial Design at Bauhaus University Weimar, he combines expertise in design, functionality and sustainable construction. His work focuses on circular, environmentally responsible building solutions and the practical implementation of sustainable construction concepts without greenwashing.
The seminar concluded with an interactive discussion session, providing participants with the opportunity to raise individual questions and exchange experiences regarding the procurement and implementation of modular construction projects.
