Meet our pilots – Kamnik

Date: 08.10.2025
The design was based on participatory workshops involving NGOs, municipal staff, and residents. The project aimed to reframe the site as a civic venue by introducing urban furniture, event programming, and pedestrian-friendly design. Strong pre-pilot engagement and a clear communication strategy contributed to its early success, with expectations for successful second implementation of the rest of the pilot and replication in other city areas.

Kamnik chose a municipally owned but underused square through a participatory process that included local NGOs, organisations, municipal staff, and business owners. Multiple workshops and interviews were conducted, and a place was chosen on the basis of insufficient use for pedestrians and cyclists.

Kamnik involved a diverse group from the start, including municipal departments, the vice-mayor, public institutes, local NGOs, business owners, and residents. They used early workshops not only for site selection but also to activate participation for the entire process.

Kamnik’s structured participatory design, adequate communication, and promotion of activities gave them a good start for implementation.
