Bamberg aimed for a prominent public square but had to restart the process after failing to secure an agreement with the landowner, which significantly delayed planning. The second time around, they went a bit smaller and found a manageable space that could serve as a vibrant meeting spot for the community. While selecting the site, they also took into consideration the significance of the site in relation to Bamberg World Heritage Area.
amberg’s associations, organizations and institutions connected to the World Heritage site were involved as well as the city administration. The public was also involved from the start. Bamberg ZWB encountered an unexpected push when a city employee living near the popup site became a community multiplier and connector.
In Bamberg, success depends heavily on the cooperation of local retailers and the neighborhood association. A responsive traffic authority also plays a key role. There is also overall goodwill from local administration and stakeholders.
