The “Innovation Voucher” program in Austria, initiated by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), aims to enhance the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including startups, by fostering their research and innovation activities in collaboration with R&D institutions. This program, ongoing since 2018, supports a variety of activities such as feasibility studies, prototype development, and analysis of technology transfer potential. With up to 80% funding for external R&D costs (maximum €10,000), it encourages SMEs to engage in innovative projects. Companies can select suitable research institutions from a list of over 500 universities and R&D centers and can also consult with FFG for guidance. The program’s simplicity and support make it a best practice in promoting innovation in SMEs.
