The EGTC GO has officially launched its role in the EU-funded BorderLabs CE project, aimed at fostering sustainable and collaborative cross-border development. At the heart of EGTC GO’s mission lies the creation of a cross-border model for slow and sustainable tourism based on bicycle mobility, connecting Gorizia and Nova Gorica with their peri-urban and surrounding areas. This initiative is closely aligned with the visibility and legacy goals of the upcoming European Capital of Culture, GO! 2025.
Key project steps include the development of an action plan by experts Ivan Curzolo and Matjaž Marušič. The plan draws on legal framework analysis from both Italy and Slovenia and surveys existing tourism strategies to build synergies and avoid duplication. Mobile data counters will soon be installed to monitor cycling and non-cycling routes, supporting evidence-based decision-making.
The participatory nature of the project is central: local and regional authorities, as well as tourism stakeholders, are being actively involved in shaping the model. Upcoming activities include a regional workshop and an international project partner meeting, leading up to the final presentation of the model in May 2026.
“BorderLabs CE offers a chance to review the cycling initiatives implemented in the cross-border region, evaluate their successes and shortcomings, and design a strategic plan for future progress,” said Romina Kocina, Director of EGTC GO.
