The rollout event for the VReduMED research project at OTH Regensburg marked an important step in the introduction of virtual reality in nursing education. The aim of the event was to bring together teachers and practical instructors from healthcare and nursing facilities and vocational schools to share their experiences with VR and open up new perspectives for the use of digital learning technologies. The founders of the tech company paneoVR also took part and established the connection between technological development and educational practice. “Such encounters create a space where research, education, and technology can come together and jointly develop new approaches to nursing education,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Christa Mohr, head of the Nursing Research Laboratory at OTH Regensburg.

After a welcome by Prof. Dr. Nicolas Schöpf, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mohr introduced the VReduMED project and its objectives. The paneoVR team presented its learning application and explained how it can be used to promote practical learning experiences in nursing education. Teachers from the Regensburg Nursing Campus then presented their own experiences with the app, which they had already tested in their classes. Using VR glasses, they showed a newly developed nursing scenario that clearly demonstrated how immersive learning environments can bring complex nursing procedures to life. In three additional workshops, supplementary training scenarios were presented and possible areas of application in theory and practice were discussed. During the lunch break and the concluding exchange, participants took the opportunity to network, reflect on their experiences from the pilot phase, and discuss future areas of application for VR in nursing education.

The event highlighted the high level of interest in innovative forms of learning and the value of personal dialogue between education and technology. Many of the teachers and practical instructors in attendance had already tried VR glasses with different learning applications in the classroom or in training and reported on their experiences. “The response shows that there is a great need for innovative forms of learning and that cooperation between research, education, and practice is the key to success,” summarized Anselm Stadler, research assistant at the VR Lab at OTH Regensburg. The event made it clear that virtual reality is increasingly becoming part of the reality of nursing education and can be used as a tool to make learning more tangible, networked, and future-oriented.

Participants included teachers and practical instructors from nursing and healthcare facilities, the founders of Paneo VR, project partners from Austria, and the Strategic Partnership Sensorik e.V. The VReduMED team from OTH Regensburg was represented by Prof. Dr. Christa Mohr and Anselm Stadler, as well as two student assistants, Stephanie Teves and Cheryl Heinz.

The list of participants includes 44 people – some of whom are dedicated practical instructors from healthcare facilities and teachers from vocational schools for healthcare and nursing professions, the tech team from paneoVR, project partners from Austria, and the Strategic Partnership Regensburg e.V. The OTH Regensburg team includes Prof. Dr. Christa Mohr as head of the nursing research laboratory, Anselm Stadler as a research assistant, Sümeyye Yildiran for public relations, and two student assistants.
