Energy-smart & circular: practical paths towards a more circular public transport in Central Europe

On behalf of the University of Gdańsk, we are pleased to invite you to the transnational workshop organised in the framework of the CE4CE – Public Transport Infrastructure in Central Europe: facilitating the transition to a circular economy project. This transnational workshop aims to turn circular economy principles into practical steps for public transport energy systems, assets, and operations. It will introduce CE4CE tools (circularity compass and the newly launched matchmaking forum for electric public transport), showcase operator-led pilots on monitoring, simulation, and optimisation of public transport. Moreover, the workshop will create space for peer exchange so cities and operators can take home actionable ideas to improve circularity and energy performance. The workshop brings together public transport operators, city authorities, industry and academia to exchange concrete practices for circularity in energy, infrastructure and rolling stock. Participants will hear from leading pilot cities and partners and discover new CE4CE tools (including the circularity compass and a brand-new matchmaking forum for electric public transport). Presentations include:

• PV for public transport: PKT experience (Speakers: Mikolaj Bartlomiejczyk – PKT Gdynia, Aleksander Jagiello – University of Gdansk)
• Energy storage for circular economy: case study of tram system in Rotterdam (Speakers: Leo Vliegenthart – RET Rotterdam, Ferran Rovira – Kruch Railway Innovations)
• CE in public transport in Wroclaw (Speaker: Witold Wozny, MPK Wroclaw)
• Circular economy in rolling stock policy: comprehensive modernisation of used trams in Gdansk (Speakers: Lech Zurek, Jacek Szmaglinski – GAiT Gdansk, Marcin Wolek – University of Gdansk)
• Introducing the eBRT research project (Speaker: Flavio Grazian, UITP)
• Walkthrough of the CE4CE Circularity Compass, launch of the matchmaking forum, and discussion of priority strategies that cities and operators can apply now for enhancing circularity (Speakers: Marta Woronowicz, trolley:motion, and Gabriele Grea, Redmint Impresa Sociale)
• Energy consumption monitoring and optimisation for tram fleet (Speaker: Stefan Röll, Leipzig Public Transport Company)
• Monitoring of catenary and energy flow simulations (Speakers: Jan Röhl, Kruch Railway Innovations and Liliana Donato, ATB Bergamo)
• Second life for e-bus batteries in the Municipality of Maribor (Speakers: Mitja Klemencic, City of Maribor and Danijel Hojski, University of Maribor)
• Pilot actions within the CE4CE project: infrastructure and vehicle maintenance circularity (Speaker: Adam Nemeth, SZKT Szeged)
