The beginning of the school year is the time when our pilot project for climate resilience in the city of Košice peaks.
Our goal in this pilot is to bring climate resilience topics, data and awareness in Slovak schools, by implementing activities throughout the city of Košice. The project brings together cities, universities, professionals, schools, civic initiatives and the public to create and share practical solutions that can be used across the continent and beyond.
Our activities at a glance
Over the past months, at joint meetings with a team of teachers and principals from 7 primary schools from Košice, Slovakia, braindstormed and came up with possibilities for using data from weather stations on the climatic conditions around schools, followed by placing sensors on the roofs of schools and showing the results on screens in the school hallways.
Climate data at schools can be used for a number of purposes:
- Pedgogical – by introducing environmental curriculum;
- As a strategic tool – use of data by school management, facilitating future decision-making processes;
- As an inclusive citizen platform – cooperation with the community, pupils and parents
- Re-shaping the urban surroundings – a change in the school policy (i.e. introducing car-free drop-off zones).
As part of setting up the educational program, we developed an environmental curriculum to connect real data from monitoring stations at schools with teaching subjects using worksheets and school dashboards. The pilot project encourages pupils to observe, evaluate and present climate change data. It also promotes environmental awareness of the impact of climate change and air pollution on human health and wellbeing. For this purpose, LED screens will be installed in the vestibules of selected schools with up-to-date information about the monitored air around the school, focusing on temperature, humidity, air pressure, speed, direction and gusts of wind, PM10, PM2.5, PM1, NO2, CO. teachers and parents about clean air and climate change in their immediate surroundings.
In the coming weeks, we will prepare for the public launch of the pilot in schools and community involvement. During the autumn, teacher training, evaluation and feedback will be collected. This effort of ours will be handed over and presented to schools during the European Mobility Week 16-22.09.2027.
