On the 7th, 8th and 9th of May, the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum hosted a lecture and a two-day workshop for primary and secondary school students, organised within the framework of the Slow Food Central Europe project.

These first two events served as an announcement for the incoming “City Breadwinners” multimedia exhibition, organised by the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum, Association Kinookus and the Dubrovnik Development Agency (DURA), which will take place in Dubrovnik this November.

On the first day of the programme, Ivo Kara-Pešić, the project leader and president of the Association Kinookus, held a lecture for the Tourism and Catering School Dubrovnik students about the principles of Slow Food philosophy applied in a local context entitled “Slow Food – From Field to Table”. Thirty-two students and two teachers participated in an interesting matching game involving key terms related to the food system, creating a map which helped them understand the roles played by chefs, waiters and pastry chefs in the preservation of the local gastronomic tradition.

On the second and third day of the programme, one of the “City breadwinners”, a local producer Mr. Mirko Matić, held a get-together for sixty-five students and seven teachers from the “Marin Držić” Elementary School, where he explained the principles of growing micro herbs and edible flowers, and how unpolluted soil rich with microorganisms is important for their production and people’s health. At a workshop entitled “Micro Greens and Sweet Flowers”, the youngest participants could learn about the long tradition of flower consumption in the Dubrovnik area and how Matić’s products find their place on the menus of local restaurants. In this way, participants were given a concrete example where they could see the importance of local food production and its direct placement into Dubrovnik’s gastronomic establishments.

The participants had the opportunity to enjoy the cakes from the “Mala truba” patisserie, owned by the Dubrovnik pastry chef Lucija Tomašić and chef Damir Šarić. The young Dubrovnik chef is also the protagonist in one of the 15 video interviews which serve as the framework for the “City Breadwinners” exhibition.

The museum educator Dubravka Tullio coordinated the lectures and workshops programme within the framework of the 24th Educational Museum Actions.
