Activities in Slovakia

Brezno will invest in a railway station to revitalize it and create spaces for public use, especially for young people in the area, using train.

Pilot story Slovakia
Brezno is a small district town located in the middle of Slovakia just under of the mountain of Nízke Tatry and is a main access point to rural area Horehronie and national parks.
One of the main means of “how to get there” is a train.
Brezno has two train stations. The main railway station is combined with the bus station but is distant from the town. On the other hand, Brezno mesto train station (“Small station”) is located near the town center.
But, how is the station enduring the years? It is actually in desperate need of refurbishment. The waiting area of the station has been inaccessible for years. First floor offices spaces can be rented. Outside there is one platform with toilets for passengers. The entire space is deteriorated and inappropriate for public transport.
The station building and surrounding space is owned by Slovak Republic but no longer uses it for Slovak Railway services and has no plan for its revitalization. On the other hand, Slovak Railways are interested to revitalize this 123 m2 building.
Current plans include a library and a gallery on the ground floor, spaces to be designed by local young artists. It will be used as meeting room for Youth Parliament. Another part of ground floor will host railway exhibition, accessible from the former ticket hall.
The exterior of station will be transformed to a more pleasant area for travelling public, by creating communal gardens, placing street furniture, small playground for children and bicycle stand (including e-bikes) which will be used for bike sharing.
